How to avoid a ‘hot spot’ diner incident
It’s not uncommon for people in Calgary’s hot spots to encounter other patrons with an affinity for the local cuisine.
In a recent episode of Calgary’s TLC series, Ray’s Hot Spot, host John Hickey revealed that in addition to having a hot spot, he has been known to see others who have an affinity to the restaurant, too.
Hickey says he has even seen Ray’s staff, many of whom he describes as “hot spot types.”
“They’ll come in and they’ll go outside and they can’t wait to get out of there,” Hickey said.
“They’ll eat at your table, they’ll take your order, they’re just there to hang out and talk about what’s hot.
They’re the kind of people you just have to know to be prepared for.”
It’s a trend that’s seen Calgary become a hot spots destination in recent years.
A 2014 report by Calgary Health found that out of 5,000 hospital admissions in the city, more than 100 were related to food-related incidents, which included the consumption of hot spots.
The city has also seen a number of restaurants open their doors to serve a more diverse customer base.
Ray’s, a popular Calgary staple, opened in June to serve the Calgary community, and the restaurant is now home to the popular Ray’s Bar and Grill.
It’s also serving a variety of new menu items, such as a beef tartare with spinach and avocado, and an array of sandwiches, salads and burgers, which are available year round.
While hot spots have certainly changed Calgary’s dining scene, it’s not a new phenomenon.
Hodge says there’s a long history of people coming in for food, and some people have even been known, in the past, to visit a Ray’s hot-spot.
“The first Ray’s was a hot place, and it was the most popular hot spot in Calgary for a long time, and people would go to that place,” he said.
“Now, they have a hot bar, but they’re still the hot spot.
People still go there for the food.
It just depends on the type of food.”
Ray’s Bar, which opened in 2018, has been serving its popular Ray-A-Cafe sandwiches since 1997.
Hodge says the restaurants are also trying to get more people to come in for their breakfast.
“People will say, ‘I don’t want to go to a Ray,’ because they’re going to get hungry,” he says.
“They have these sandwiches that they’re serving and it’s just like, ‘Oh, it can’t be that bad.’
But when you’re sitting there at a Ray and they’re not putting anything in it, you’re not going to want to eat.””

The people at Ray’s are the same people who are at the Ray’s bar,” he added.”
If you’re a Ray, you want the best food and the best customer service and the greatest food at the best price, and if you’re going there for breakfast, then you’re definitely going to go there.
